泥漿流

Seattle Weekly 報導了一則文章 (The Super Flood), 是關於火山泥 (lahar) 對大西雅圖南部地區可能造成的危害.

看了文章我才發現我還是樂觀了些. 我認為 Mt. Rainier 的危險, 是當它火山爆發所產生的岩漿, 和山上融化的雪水造成的. 事實上, 文章上的研究發現, 約六千至八千年前 Mt. Rainier 曾經發生泥漿流. 一個可能的小地震或火山內部的推擠造成的小振動. 結果造成山上的雪和泥土混合而下. 災害遠達現在的 Renton, 和西雅圖的南部地區.

根據 1999 年的報告, 約有 200,000 人居住或工作在泥漿流的危險地區. 在美麗的 Mt. Rainier 背後, 藏著的是一個全世界最危險的十四座火山之一, 也是全美最危險的火山.

禽流感病毒資訊, 也有正體中文的簡介(不過資料很少, 而且是和 SARS 一起報告).

CDC 公佈關於禽流感病毒的 Q&A. 裡面比較注意的我自己認為有這些. 更詳細的資訊可至上面的網站查尋.

* 正確的飲食, 勤洗手, 保持身體的抵抗力 (eat right, wash their hands and take common-sense steps to bolster their health and immune systems.)

* 建議施打流感疫苗. 流感疫苗無法抵制禽流感病毒, 但是身體裡建立起來的抵抗力可以保護可能的新疾病 (suggested getting a flu shot. The vaccine for the upcoming flu season doesn't confer protection against bird flu. But protecting people against conventional flu could make them stronger against a new illness, health experts say.)

* Tamiflu 是對抗一般的流感病毒有效的藥物. 科學家們相信它也許可以用來對抗 H5N1 的(禽流感)病毒. 但是任何 Tamiflu 等的 antiviral 是否有對抗的功效, 還是在於病毒本身. (Tamiflu is effective at treating ordinary flu, and scientists believe it may help combat human infections caused by the H5N1 virus. However, the effectiveness of any antiviral medicines such as Tamiflu could change depending on how the virus changes.)

Emergancy Management

Emergancy Management 這類型的文章總是常常在我這地方出現.

如果哪天 Mt. Rainier 從睡夢中醒來? 您又居住在 Pierce County Nisqually River 的流域地區, 知道如何逃生嗎?
如果哪天通過大西雅圖地區的某個斷層突然發生地震, 知道如何保護自己嗎?
如果哪天一個強烈的 Wind Storm 把 I-90 或 US-520 上的浮橋給吹沉了, 知道如何使用其他(公車)路線回家嗎?
如果哪天突然一輛運送危險化學物品的火車或卡車發生洩漏或爆炸, 知道如何遠離危險地區嗎?

上面的四個例子除了 Mt. Rainier 從睡夢中醒來還沒有發生外, 其他都曾經在大西雅圖地區發生過.

一些更簡單和平常的例子.
如果突然停電, 不巧還要出門, 可是車子在車庫裡. 沒有電車庫的門無法打開, 是否知道如何手動開門?
緊急狀況打電話到 911, 結果發現 911 故障. 是否知道當地警察局或消防隊的電話?
如果警察突然間因故把你居住地區給關閉隔離了, 是否知道接下來該怎麼辦?
家裡的火災警報器上次的檢查是什麼時候?
住在公寓或旅館時如果發生危險, 是否知道逃生路線?

每個人都要想到這類可能發生的危險和其立即的處理方式. 在居住的地方準備一個必須物品(簡單的糧食, 飲水, 護照等等), 隨時可以帶了就可以跑的袋子等等. 美國紅十字會有不少中文版的準備資訊.

各州的郡 Department of Emergency Management 也提供不少資訊和一些免費的訓練. 這些免費的訓練課程可能會在以後救了你一命. 使用 Google 搜查你居住的郡名稱和 “Emergency Management”

這些不是只有講講和想想. 颱風, 暴風雪, 龍捲風, 地震, 甚至運送危險物品的火車, 卡車造成地區性的暫時疏散和逃生技巧. 在危急時候的彼此連絡方式等等.

[新聞] 使用信用卡付餐館的帳?

Here's a tip: Restaurants may be padding the bill

在餐廳用餐使用信用卡付費時, 一些信用卡機器會自動的收取 20% 的小費. 也許你已經付了小費, 餐廳商家並不知道這件事. 信用卡公司'暫時'的把這 20% 小費扣了下來. 幾天後才加回去你的帳號. 這可能造成超出信用額度, 並被迫付超支的罰款.

CARDHOLDER TIPS

# When signing a receipt at a restaurant, don't leave the tip line blank. If you wish to leave a cash tip or no tip, do not write 0. Draw a broad line through the area, and fill in the total line.

# Make sure to duplicate on your own copy what you write on the merchant's receipt.

# Cardholders should always keep their receipts and reconcile them against their account statements sent in the mail or made available online.
